LifeReady tip: You do not need to master everything at once. Use this page as a starting point and adapt it to your situation.

Start with essentials, not a shopping spree

A first apartment does not need to be fully furnished on day one. Start with the items that make the space safe, clean, functional, and comfortable. Add convenience items after you learn what you actually use.

Bedroom essentials

A bed or mattress, sheets, pillow, blanket, hangers, a laundry hamper, and basic window covering if the apartment does not provide one.

Bathroom essentials

Towels, toilet paper, shower curtain if needed, bath mat, basic toiletries, plunger, toilet brush, and a small trash can.

Kitchen essentials

One frying pan, one saucepan, a baking sheet, cutting board, chef’s knife, can opener, mixing bowl, plates, bowls, cups, utensils, food-storage containers, dish soap, sponge, and a few basic pantry staples.

Cleaning essentials

Trash bags, all-purpose cleaner, broom or vacuum, mop if needed, laundry detergent, paper towels or reusable cloths, and basic dishwashing supplies.

Paperwork and setup

Keep your lease, renter’s insurance information, utility account details, emergency contacts, move-in inspection photos, and maintenance contact information together in one place.

What can usually wait

Matching décor, specialty kitchen appliances, large furniture sets, duplicate cookware, and anything you are buying only because a “must-have” list told you to. Live in the space first.

Helpful tools

This is where LifeReady can later add a small number of genuinely useful product or service recommendations—for example, a basic household starter item, planner, budget tool, or interview folder.
