First Grocery Shopping List for Living on Your Own
A simple first grocery shopping list for young adults living independently, organized around affordable meals, staples, snacks, and household basics.
Build around meals you will actually make
Choose three or four simple breakfasts, lunches, and dinners before shopping. Buying ingredients without a plan is one of the easiest ways to overspend and waste food.
Protein basics
Eggs, chicken, ground turkey or beef, canned tuna or beans, Greek yogurt, cheese, peanut butter, or another protein you already know you will eat.
Produce basics
Pick a few durable fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas, carrots, peppers, onions, potatoes, frozen vegetables, or salad greens you can use before they spoil.
Carbohydrate basics
Rice, pasta, oats, bread or tortillas, potatoes, and one or two cereals or breakfast staples.
Pantry and flavor
Olive or cooking oil, salt, pepper, garlic, a few favorite seasonings, canned tomatoes, broth, sauces, and condiments you use regularly.
Household items people forget
Dish soap, sponges, trash bags, paper products, food-storage bags or containers, laundry detergent, and basic cleaning supplies.
A good first-shopping rule
Buy one week of food first. You can always go back. A smaller first trip teaches you how quickly you actually use things.
