LifeReady tip: You do not need to master everything at once. Use this page as a starting point and adapt it to your situation.

Learn the basics about the employer

Know what the company does, what the job involves, where the interview is, and the name of the person you are meeting if it was provided.

Prepare three short examples

Think of situations where you were dependable, solved a problem, helped someone, learned something quickly, or handled a difficult responsibility. School, volunteering, sports, clubs, family responsibilities, and part-time work all count.

Practice common questions out loud

Practice answering “Tell me about yourself,” “Why are you interested in this job?” and “Tell me about a time you solved a problem.” Speaking answers aloud is much more useful than only thinking about them.

Decide what to wear the night before

Choose clean, neat clothing that is appropriate for the workplace. The goal is to look prepared and respectful—not expensive.

Bring the basics

Bring copies of your résumé if you have one, a pen, a small notebook, identification if requested, and the address or parking instructions.

Arrive early, but not extremely early

Plan to be in the area with extra time for traffic or parking, then enter about 10 minutes before the interview unless instructed otherwise.

Follow up

Send a short thank-you email within a day. Mention the position, thank the interviewer for their time, and briefly repeat your interest.
